Narwal Freo X Ultra

The Freo X Ultra, a highly rated and extremely functional Gen 4 robotic vacuum and mop is a well-built machine. The $1400 price tag may be hard to swallow but it is often available to make it more affordable. The unit is beautiful and the base station takes up just a small space in a corner of a room.

The design of this robot is a solution to some of the issues we've experienced with other robotic mop and vacuum units, including brushes that get caught in hair, and the vacuum brush not being able to reach bare flooring beneath furniture. The sweeping performance is also impressive on carpets and bare flooring. The vacuum/mop system is equipped with the highest level of debris pickup and the mop is able to saturate bare floors quickly.

The mops also use an intelligent system to clean along the edges of furniture and around walls. The robot is able to effortlessly avoid obstacles like toys, food bowls and backpacks. But it can get stuck or get caught up in smaller and flatter objects like shoelaces, USB cables, and pen.

This robot was used to vacuum and mop hardwood floors FLOR carpet tiles as well as pile rugs in an open-plan house. It vacuumed and mops the 90 square meters in 170 minutes, with FREO Mind enabled. This is a bit more than the average for Gen 4 robots.

A number of features set this robot apart from other robots in its class. The Freo X Ultra has a array of sensors, software, and hardware improvements engineered to keep it at the top of its class. It has been declared to have an autonomy of 3.5 hours for environments of up to 260 square meters.

You can customize multiple features of the Freo app, such as how often the robot is back to the base station as well as its mopping frequency and power (silent or smart) and mopping humidity. The app can also detect areas that are heavily soiled and create an efficient cleaning route, as well as give detergent out or raise the carpet's pads.

Other noteworthy features include a fast charging battery, an easy-to-read display on the robot's underside and a handy dock door that is easy to open. The Freo X Ultra vacuum and mop is perfect for homeowners and apartment dwellers who wish to cut down on chores and keep their homes clean.

Miele Scout RX3

Miele has a reputation of quality and innovation in the world of robot vacuuming. The new Miele robot is designed to elevate the cleaning capabilities to a new level, thanks to its advanced features.

The RX3 has a dual-suction system, intelligent mapping with 3D mapping, and a camera which transmits live images to your smartphone. The RX3's powerful four-stage system for cleaning provides excellent dust removal on carpet and hard floors, while its easy-to-use swing-out side brushes and dual suction channels remove dust from corners.  auto vacuum cleaner  allows it to fit under low furniture, while front cameras and infrared sensors help it navigate around obstacles and thresholds with ease.

The Scout RX3 impressed us in our test on how well it cleaned baking powder around corners and baseboards. Its suction of 2,500 Pa was a bit weaker than other robots but it moved quickly and was extremely quiet. It did not mop and its clean pad was a challenge to attach. It also wasn't able to take on dirt that had dried up.

Its app is a little on the basic side and lacks features such as multiple cleaning modes and automated scheduling. It does work with Alexa however, its voice controls aren't intuitive or responsive. It's also unreliable when it comes navigating its way back to the charging station after an outing -- other robots can trace a previous path or sensibly follow a wall around until they get to their destination, but the RX3 simply bumbles around until it finally gives up and sends a failure message to your phone.

Another issue we had was with its smart features, specifically the mapping function and digital keep-out zones. While it did a great job of avoiding our furniture legs and shoes, it got easily caught by cables and socks and couldn't handle the tassels that adorn carpets. That's the reason we didn't choose to include it on our Best Buy list. With a decent price tag and impressive performance, the Scout RX3 is worth considering if you're looking for an alternative to traditional uprights.
